Shadow work involves healing…the parts of you that you’ve buried, denied, feared or neglected.

Your shadow isn’t evidence that you’re broken. In most cases, it’s old emotional wounds, limiting beliefs, protective behaviors, unmet needs, and survival energy impressed upon your being during challenging times throughout your life.

Shadow work is the practice of befriending those rejected parts of yourself with curiosity, compassion and honesty so you can heal.

Doing shadow work can help you discover why you react the way you do in certain situations. Uncovering these hidden emotions and beliefs allow you to find healing and relief. Your shadow self can subtly affect your relationships, reactions, decisions, and overall sense of well-being.

Why Do Shadow Work?

If you ignore your shadow self, it will continue to control many aspects of your life. You might find yourself:

  • Continually finding yourself in unhealthy relationships

  • Fighting with feelings of inadequacy

  • Having the same emotional reactions triggered over and over

  • Attracting the same challenges repeatedly

Shadow work can allow you to:

  • Recognize the beliefs that are no longer serving you.

  • Release old emotional baggage.

  • Break cycles of unhealthy relationships.

  • Practice more self-love and compassion.

  • Grow your emotional strength.

  • Advance on your spiritual path.

  • Experience more authenticity and peace.

Shadow Work Occurs in Layers

One common myth about shadow work is that you do it and cross it off your list. Inner healing is a process that occurs at many levels over your lifetime.

When you become aware, wiser, and more emotionally strong, other layers of healing are ready to rise to the surface. Maybe you think you overcame a fear of rejection in childhood, only to find yourself in a similar situation as an adult that triggers old feelings of inadequacy. It’s not because you failed at shadow work. Quite the opposite.

You have a deeper capacity for healing those old wounds now. Each stage of life has another lesson to show you if you have the courage to look within.

Visualize Shadow Work as Tending to a Garden

Think of your spirit as a garden… With each new season, there are always more flowers to bloom, new roots hidden beneath the surface, and weeds. You never “finish” gardening a plant. You revisit every season to provide what it needs to grow healthily.

Similar to nature, your healing journey is cyclical.

Each time you choose to sit with your shadow self is an opportunity to restore more of your inner light, confidence, peace, and truth.

Pretending dark parts of yourself don’t exist or don’t matter will never lead to healing. But acknowledging them with patience and dedication will.

It’s NOT About Being “Done” With Your Shadows

Inner healing isn’t about fixing what’s “wrong” with you. There is nothing wrong with you to begin with.

Shadow work allows you to become WHOLE.

When you learn to accept every part of you with truth, bravery, and love, you open the doorway to deeper healing. Authentic relationships. Emotional liberation. And a closer connection to your true essence.

Maybe It’s Time To Do Shadow Work If…

You find yourself in the same bad relationship dynamics over and over.

You consistently have the same problems with friends, family, lovers, and coworkers.

You experience the same fears popping up in your life all the time.

You find yourself feeling emotionally stuck and recognize the same patterns keep unfolding.

Life has a funny way of showing us the same lessons over and over until we’re ready to dig a little deeper. Shadow work gives you the chance to understand why those patterns are there in the first place. So you can heal them without judgment or criticism. As you learn to shine a light on what you’ve been ignoring, you can slowly dissolve the patterns that no longer serve you and welcome new, healthy relationships, emotional peace, and freedom into your life.
