Samhain Ancestor Honoring & Release Spell
Here’s a simple Samhain ritual for honoring ancestors and releasing what no longer serves you. Samhain (October 31 to November 1) is traditionally the thinnest veil between worlds, so it’s a good time for remembrance and release.
Samhain Ancestor Honoring & Release Spell
You’ll need:
One black candle (for release and protection)
One white or orange candle (for ancestral light)
A small dish of salt
A piece of paper and a pen
A fireproof bowl or cauldron
Optional: a photo or keepsake of someone you’ve lost, a cup of wine, cider, or water, and a small offering of bread or apple
Preparation:
Do this after dark, ideally on Samhain night. Tidy your space, dim the lights, and arrange your items on a table or altar. Sprinkle a small ring of salt around your workspace to mark it as protected.
The ritual:
Ground and center.
Take three slow breaths. Feel your feet on the floor and let your mind settle.
Light the white or orange candle and say: “I light this flame for those who came before. Blood and bone, memory and name, you are remembered, you are welcome here.”
Speak to your ancestors.
Say the names of loved ones you want to honor, aloud or silently. Share a memory, say thanks, or tell them what’s been on your heart. Place your offering beside the candle.
Write what you’re releasing.
On the paper, write a habit, fear, grudge, or burden you want to leave behind with the dying year.
Light the black candle and say: “As the year turns and the dark time comes, I release what I no longer need to carry.
Let it fall away like autumn leaves.”
Burn the paper in the fireproof bowl using the black candle’s flame. Watch it burn and visualize the weight lifting.
Close the ritual. Thank your ancestors and say: “Rest well, loved ones, and walk in peace. The veil settles, the wheel turns.
So mote it be.”
Snuff the candles (rather than blowing them out, to keep the energy contained).
Leave your offering outside overnight, returning it to the earth in the morning. Scatter the ashes outdoors or bury them.
Optional extras: Set a place at your table for the departed, or practice a “dumb supper,” a silent meal in their honor. Divination with tarot or runes is also traditional at Samhain.
Always burn candles and paper safely, on a heat proof surface and away from anything flammable.
