Many Pagans adopt a ๐ฎ๐ข๐จ๐ช๐ค๐ข๐ญ ๐ฏ๐ข๐ฎ๐ฆ or a witchy name upon their initiation into the Craft. It's often done by a coven (after a year and a day OR directly upon initiation) and itโs typically used only within oneโs coven and not given freely to anyone who can use it. However, if you are solitary, you can simply adopt a name for yourself. Alternately, your deity may gift you a name.

โข Donโt just choose something because it sounds neat. Liken it to getting something you think is cool as a tattoo, and 10 years down the road youโre getting it lasered off as a bad idea. Youโd want to still resonate with you years later.
โข Find something with meaning, something that is unique to who you are, or who you want to become. Do you want to be strong? Loving? What about clever, courageous, resourceful, serene, joyful? Think of things that reflect YOU. If youโre crafty, consider a name with โpainterโ or โweaverโ. If you are strong, maybe a name with โironโ. If youโd like to be resilient yet peaceful, โwillowโ may a good addition to your name. Itโs common for names to be seasonal or times of day, like โSummer Twilightโ. You may want to choose an animal or being of folklore you connect with, but just note that there are many duplicate names out there. You may meet a lot of ravens or cats in the community, so just keep it in mind.
โข You may think about changing the words to a different language or combining them and adding or taking away letters to your liking.
For example, for someone who sees themselves as intellectual and wants to improve their emotional aspect, they can choose โEastโ since the east is of the mind; and โcobaltโ which is the color for emotional healing, and adding Iris who is their goddess. Easbalier is the long combined word of those three, then can be reduced to Bali, right out of the middle, which is much easier and still has the same special connection to the words chosen. At least to you it does, and that gives the name power.
โข Avoid names with lord or lady, as those are often reserved for elders. Itโs also frowned upon to give yourself a full name of a deity. Both of those situations are seen as hubris. Alternately, if youโd like to choose a name to honor your deity, perhaps use an animal or object that represents them instead.
โข Another method of finding the perfect name would be to correspond it to your birth number. To do this, you add the numbers of your birthday. Say mine is July 20th, 1986. It would show as 7201986=33. Then add 3+3=6.
The number 6 would be my birth number.

Letโs say youโve decide you like the name "Willow." Using the letters in โWillowโ you would take the numbers 5 + 9 + 3 + 3 + 6 + 5 = 32. From there, 3 + 2 = 5. If the name you like doesnโt match your birth numbers, try some creative or alternate spellings to see what happens.
